Wi-Fi Alliance® applauds Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum NOI

Austin, TX and Washington D.C. – August 3, 2017 – Wi-Fi Alliance® applauds the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) adoption of "Expanding Flexible Use in Mid-Band Spectrum” Notice of Inquiry (NOI). Wi-Fi Alliance is particularly encouraged by the NOI’s focus on extending unlicensed operations to the 5.925-6.425 GHz and 6.425-7.125 GHz bands.

Over the last 20 years, the growth in Wi-Fi® usage has exceeded all expectations. Today’s Wi-Fi exemplifies innovation by carrying more data traffic than any other wireless technology and delivering high-performance connectivity to billions of business, education, enterprise, and government users who depend on Wi-Fi connectivity every day. Spectrum access needed for Wi-Fi functionality, however, has not kept pace with Wi-Fi growth. A recent study predicts degradation in Wi-Fi performance and availability due to significant spectrum shortfall in the near future. With this NOI the FCC takes a significant step toward alleviating projected Wi-Fi spectrum shortfall, and most importantly, toward ensuring that Americans continue to experience tremendous socioeconomic benefits delivered by Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi Alliance looks forward to working with the FCC on this important initiative.
